Papers relating to W.W. I., mostly letters to his family, 1915-1928. Four letters from Eric Chinner, Duntroon Military College, May 1915--10 Oct. 1915. Forty-eight letters written while on active service at sea, in Middle East and France, 1915-1916 July 15. Letters and tributes concerning Eric Chinner's death while on active service, 26 July 1916-17 Jan 1928, including some from C.E.W. Bean, the official war historian. Also photographs and negatives, ca. 1914-1918. The photographs are not annotated, with one exception. They depict soldiers in uniform, shipboard scenes, scenes in the Middle East, and scenes of various aspects of military life.

Eric Harding Chinner was born in Peterborough, S. Aust., in Jan. 1894. He was a member of the Australian Military Forces and was appointed as an officer of the Australian Imperial Force on 7 Oct. 1915 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was commanding officer 6 Platoon, B Company, 32nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Brigade. Eric Chinner died of wounds as a prisoner of war on 17 July 1916.
